Janelle S and Dean S: February Academics of the Month

Academics – Janelle S

Janelle is one of the outstanding and high achieving students I know. Despite being in chambers, captain of the color guard team, a member of multiple clubs and organizations, involved in her church, and an integral part of tons of other activities, she always prioritizes her studies and does anything in her power to help the students around her.
For two weeks during intervention, Janelle gave up half of her lunch to tutor freshmen in integrated 1. After school, Janelle can be found in the library, tutoring struggling students. She never puts them down for not knowing the right answer, nor does she just tell them the correct answer. Instead, she works slowly through the problem with the student, checking for comprehension and understanding along the way. Then she encourages them to try the next one on their own and if they are still confused, she works with them until the student is able to demonstrate mastery of the concept. Students come to tutoring just to have Janelle as their tutor. In class, if the teacher is busy working with other students, our peers are perfectly comfortable turning to Janelle for assistance on a challenging problem. Often, they ask Janelle for help before asking the teacher.
She balances all of this and more while maintaining a 4.0 GPA (on the 4.0 scale)
and taking multiple AP classes.
