Bonita High School Mourns the Loss of Distinguished Alumnus and Jazz Legend Gordon Goodwin

Bonita High School is saddened to share the passing of world renowned composer, arranger, and performer Gordon Goodwin, a proud Bearcat whose impact on jazz and music education spanned generations. Goodwin passed away after a difficult battle with pancreatic cancer. His legacy, however, continues to resonate across campus, in music classrooms around the world, and in the hearts of the countless students he inspired.

History teacher Matt Mullin reflected on the magnitude of Goodwin’s influence, noting that he was “a hero to millions of band students all over the world.” Mullin added that Goodwin’s passion extended far beyond performance. “Gordon not only had an intense love of jazz, but also a real passion for education and outreach. He always offered free or reduced price tickets to students and would make time after the show to chat with them.”

Goodwin, a 25 time Grammy nominee with 4 Grammy wins and 3 Emmy Awards, often spoke fondly of his time at Bonita and of the teacher who first opened the door to jazz for him. Mullin described him as “a proud Bearcat,” emphasizing both his professional accomplishments and his generosity toward young musicians. Many Bonita students may not realize they grew up hearing Goodwin’s work, including memorable compositions for the beloved show Animaniacs.

Band director Jeff Bird shared his personal appreciation for Goodwin’s artistry and character. “I was quickly introduced to his wonderful writing, entertaining performances and legacy as a Bonita alum,” Bird said. “I’m so glad that we were able to perform a large part of his library over the years and share his genius with jazz fans.”

Bird also recalled the unforgettable experience of welcoming Goodwin back to Bonita in 2024 to rehearse and perform with the school’s musicians. “Sharing the stage with Gordon was a dream come true and a once in a lifetime inspirational moment for the students who participated,” he said. “He was so humble, fun, and easy going when he came out to rehearse and perform with us. One of the greatest memories of my career.”

Goodwin’s 2024 appearance at Bonita included an extraordinary collaboration with student musicians. Community members can revisit those moments here:

Mullin, who will be playing Goodwin’s music over the bells in his honor, encouraged students and alumni to spend time listening to Goodwin’s work. The Bonita community extends heartfelt condolences to Goodwin’s family, friends, colleagues, and the many musicians he inspired. His influence will continue to be felt every time a Bonita student picks up an instrument, steps on stage, or discovers a love of jazz.

Rest in peace, Gordon. Once a Bearcat, always a Bearcat.
